Life's Big Questions and Challenges

Hope lost, hope found

Believe in God? What god? Dan Gaynor lost hope as a boy of 11, when his father died in a tragic kayaking accident. Turning atheist, Dan regarded God as little more than a myth and a false hope for the weak. read more

Why is there human suffering?

There are no easy answers to the question of the purpose of suffering and evil. The tendency is to blame God for these conditions, but He did not create them. They came as a result of man's disobedience to God, beginning back in the Garden of Eden; see Genesis 3:16-19. read more

Why is everyone leaving the church?

Talk about a string of bad press! In addition to a write up in the Christian Science Monitor [The Coming Evangelical Collapse], a cover article of the Newsweek Magazine entitled “The End of Christian America,” a more readable and short article popped up last week on ABC News entitled, “Young America Losing Their Religion.” read more

Forgiveness

When someone hurts us and their actions forever affect our lives, the instinctive response is to choose anger and seek vengeance. We look for ways to punish the offender because we want him or her to understand the deep pain we feel and to suffer in the same way. The Apostle Paul's instruction to forgive is easier said than done. read more

Joy is not happiness

Most of us recognize the name Stephen Hawking. He tends to be known for two things: he’s a world-renowned physicist, and he’s almost completely paralyzed due to ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease). read more

Is there a God?

Do "God-believers," ever wonder, "Am I just talking to myself?" Do those of you who don't believe in a God ever have one of those moments where you sense there is someone or something behind this whole thing? read more

How do you cope with pain?

Health is not a guaranteed thing. That fact was made brutally clear to me four summers ago when my body decided to go on strike. I am an active person in general, so when I woke up one morning with soreness, I thought I had just overdone it the day before. As the day progressed, the pain became worse, to the point where I could no longer move any part of my hands, wrists, or legs without excruciating pain shooting all over my body. read more

Death is not Dying

What do you think happens after we die? Is this it? One long, arduous, and ultimately meaningless existence, or is there more? One woman, a former Vancouverite named Rachel Barkey, made the bold claim that ‘death is not dying.’ She would know. After all, she chronicled physically dying, one day at a time, of cancer. read more

The lessons of a tough-guy coach

I’m not much of a hockey fan, but I do keep track of the Montreal Canadiens. That means, like fans of the other NHL teams he coached (the Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils), I’ve been saddened to read how cancer has left Pat Burns weakened, gaunt and admitting the end is not far off. read more

Where am I going?

Funerals are being held around the world every day. Saddened mourners crowd around the open grave. They pay their last respects to a departed one being lowered into the cold earth. It is a very traumatic time. read more

When do we need forgiveness?

When I talk about spirituality with people, the conversation train often runs smack into a wall when the notion of forgiveness comes up. It seems that, unless you’re referring to Criminal Code convictions, many folks don’t think they need to ask anyone, God included, for forgiveness. “What have I done wrong that needs forgiving?” seems to be the prevailing point of view. “I’ve never broken any major laws. I’ve never robbed or beaten up anyone. Asking forgiveness is for people who’ve done bad stuff. Not for me.” read more

Simple, but not easy

Mother Teresa was often asked what it takes to develop a deep spiritual walk with God. One of her most common answers was this: “Following God is simple, but it’s not easy.” read more

Satisfaction

According to USA Today, Rolling Stone magazine is still one of the most popular magazines consumers can purchase. It has frequently published lists of the top 100 songs since the birth of rock ‘n roll. Hitting number one twice was the Rolling Stones hit, Can’t Get No Satisfaction.  read more

The age of distraction

Students can’t work without music, noise, the surroundings of a busy coffee shop, MSNing. We are terminally distracted and, Sam Anderson reminds, “distracted... was once a synonym for insane.” More than that, modern-day experts have found that “people who frequently check their e-mail have tested as less intelligent than people who are actually high on marijuana.”  read more

Creation vs. Evolution - Is this a sensible question?

Grab a coffee, pull up a chair and get ready to think. This topic will grab your heart – and challenge your cranium! Plan to dig deep for a while, avoiding distractions. (Originally posted by Professor John Stackhouse.) . . . The furore over creation versus evolution has been going on for almost a century and a half since Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species (1859). The sad thing is that so much energy is wasted on what is, mostly, a non-issue: “creation versus evolution” is, in most respects, nonsense.  read more

Honesty is the best poetry

For the past number of weeks I have been questioning my own honesty. Asking the question, what is my first responsibility—to be honest or to be understood? I truly believe “the Truth shall set you free.” (John 8:32) While this verse from the Bible is speaking of Jesus, I also believe it is speaking of every truth — every bit of honesty.  read more

Divorce: Free at a grocery store near you

It would be an understatement to say I was taken aback when I saw the “Easy-to-Use Divorce Kit” at Staples a month ago. I don’t know if you ever get that “it’s not right feeling” in your stomach, but from time to time something sends my guts all aflutter. Today it was opening Divorce Magazine, spotted on the free publication stand at my local grocery store. read more

Marvel

If the stars should appear but one night every thousand years, how man would marvel and stare. (Ralph Waldo Emerson) Marvel. A word, I think, we use too scarcely. Definition: [mahr-vuhl] (noun) something that causes wonder, admiration, or astonishment; a wonderful thing; a wonder or prodigy. (verb) to wonder at (usually fol. by a clause as object): A child marvels that the stars can be. (verb, used without object) to be filled with wonder, admiration, or astonishment, as at something surprising or extraordinary. Origin: 1250–1300. Marvel is a word reserved for things above the every day, things to be worshiped. It seems, for most, little in life inspires this kind of awe. For me, it is the strength and terror of the ocean. The majesty of the Milky Way. The stillness of Everest’s silver peaks. Yet to come to this place of awe or worship I must find myself absolutely still, alone, present and best away from the clamour of the city.  read more
